I was recently interviewed by Pink Pangea, a community for women who love to travel. The article has just been published this week!
They interviewed me about my experience in Laos, where I spent three weeks earlier this year, visiting Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane as well as a tiny village called Pho Kam, north of Vang Vieng in the Kasi province. I had an amazing time in Laos, doing things like hiking, kayaking and the classic river tubing – only instead of going tubing with hundreds of backpackers in Vang Vieng, I went tubing with a small group of people I met at a guesthouse, and we were joined by lots of local kids – and even more buffaloes.
In the interview, I also shared my tips for accommodation and restaurants (including a place that will make you fine dining insect dishes, if you ask!), and gave some tips for female travelers specifically. Laos seemed like a fairly safe place to travel overall.
One of the places I talk about is Nola Guesthouse in Pho Kam. It’s an extremely basic guesthouse – essentially a wooden shack with six tiny rooms, and cold water only (there’s not even a sink!). I really felt like we were “roughing it”, but looking back at our experiences in Laos, a lot of the coolest things we did happened there. Aside from what I talk about in the interview, we also got invited for beers by a random group of soldiers sitting by the side of the road one day. It was our first Beer Lao – one (ok, three) of many. Definitely an experience I will never forget.
The bungalow at Nola Guesthouse, housing six little rooms, and a porch with hammocks looking out over the river right behind it. Adventure awaits!
